MIAMI, FLORIDA, January 13, 2016 – Former Assistant US Attorney Jeffrey W. Dickstein, a leading government lawyer in Medicare fraud cases, has joined top whistleblower law firm Phillips & Cohen LLP as a partner.
In addition, Phillips & Cohen has opened an office in Miami, where Dickstein will be based. Phillips & Cohen, the most successful law firm representing US and international whistleblowers, also has offices in Washington, DC; London and San Francisco.
Dickstein has more than 30 years of experience with healthcare litigation, most recently as a federal prosecutor investigating and prosecuting whistleblower qui tam lawsuits and other Medicare fraud cases with the US Attorney’s Office in the Southern District of Florida. He was awarded the Department of Justice Special Commendation Award in 2015 for “particularly outstanding services.”
“Jeffrey Dickstein brings an exceptional knowledge of healthcare fraud, healthcare systems and government enforcement that will be extremely beneficial for our whistleblower clients,” said Erika A. Kelton, a partner at Phillips & Cohen. “He is a multi-dimensional litigator who has tremendous experience with complex healthcare cases that complements our practice well.”
Dickstein’s healthcare fraud cases were noteworthy not only because they recovered significant financial losses for the Medicare and Medicaid programs but also because they stopped medically unnecessary procedures and prevented significant patient harm.
He was one of the lead government prosecutors in a qui tam case that recently resulted in settlements totaling more than $250 million with nearly 500 hospitals in 43 states. That case concerned whistleblower allegations that hundreds of hospitals implanted cardiac devices, known as implantable cardioverter defibrillators, too soon after heart attacks or heart surgery.
“I am thrilled to join Phillips & Cohen and to work directly with whistleblowers to stop instances of Medicare fraud and other healthcare fraud,” Dickstein said. “There is no law firm that does a better job of representing whistleblowers than Phillips & Cohen.”
Before joining the Justice Department, Mr. Dickstein had a successful practice representing patients in medical malpractice cases, both as a partner in a law firm he co-founded and as a solo practitioner.
