Whistleblower attorney Claire Sylvia named a California “Litigation Star”

San Francisco, CA, Oct. 17, 2019 – Phillips & Cohen partner Claire M. Sylvia was recognized as a “Litigation Star” in California for 2020 by Benchmark Litigation for her success in representing whistleblowers as a qui tam attorney and for her expertise in False Claims Act matters.

Sylvia’s record of success representing whistleblowers includes a $37 million case against defense contractor Alliant Techsystems (ATK) and a $14.1 million case against Adventist Health. She recently represented a whistleblower in a case against Cisco Systems that settled for $8.6 million, in what was likely the first successful qui tam case involving cybersecurity issues.

Sylvia is a nationally recognized luminary in qui tam discourse. Her book, The False Claims Act: Fraud Against the Government, (West 2016), is a critical contribution to the field, used by judges and attorneys since its initial publication in 2004. Her professional expertise and views on whistleblower matters are often sought by the media, and she has testified at committee hearings of the US Congress and the California state legislature on healthcare fraud and the False Claims Act.

Benchmark Litigation says it selects its “Litigation Star” honorees based on attorneys’ records of success and recommendations by their clients and peers. Litigation Stars are “lawyers who are highly regarded by their peers and possess a strong case record and positive client feedback.”

Benchmark Litigation’s selections “aim to cover only firms and litigators that are of an elite status,” according to the publication.

This is the second year in a row that Benchmark Litigation has selected Sylvia as a “Litigation Star.”
